MERV WILLIS CUP FINAL

Sunday May 17th - Deal Town Rangers 4 Kennington Colts Juniors 1

RANGERS COME FROM BEHIND TO CLINCH LEAGUE AND CUP DOUBLE

Rangers came from behind to beat Kennington Colts juniors 4-1 to win the Merv Willis Cup and complete a memorable league and cup double in what has been an unbelievable season for the team.

A strong wind at the Charles Sports Ground made it difficult to play good football but Kennington adapted better to the conditions and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half. Keeper Eoin Mcgrath had no chance with the goal but was equal to everything that came his way afterwards playing confidently throughout.

Just when it looked like Deal would go in behind at half time they won a corner which Ellis Keohane delivered perfectly in to the path of Tom Miles who volleyed the ball home stylishly to make the score 1-1 at half time.

Deal started the second half much more confidently with the central midfield trio of Harry virtue, Tom Miles and Jack Staples passing the ball fluently and controlling the match.

Ainsley Jones and Jon Stupples ably supported by Luke Frost, Felix Percy and James Cressey were now letting nothing past them and distributing the ball well as Deal's dominance grew.

They went ahead when Tom Miles went on a mazy run down the right hand side, skipping past three defenders before squaring the ball to Jack Staples who controlled it on the turn before firing home a fierce low shot past the keeper.

With Jack Simpson-Barnes, Billy Simpson-Barnes and Idris Ozturk all working hard to ensure Kennington didnt get back in to the game another goal was imminent and Tom Miles was again the provider setting up Ellis Keohane to put Deal 3-1 ahead.

With Kennington now beginning to tire Harry Virtue skipped clear only to be denied by a brilliant block by the keeper but the ball fell kindly into the path of James Van Der Dol who swept the ball home to complete the scoring.

All fourteen squad members performed with great credit as they have done throughout the whole season and should be congratulated on the commitment, desire and skill they have shown....

Sunday 3rd May - Kennington 0 Deal Town Rangers 10

CHAMPION PERFORMANCE AS RANGERS SEAL TITLE WITH TEN GOAL BLITZ

Deal Town Rangers were finally crowned Division one champions after an excellent 10-0 victory away to Kennington.

After a fairly nervy start Deal took the lead when Jack Simpson-Barnes set up James Van Der Dol who slotted the ball in to the corner. Kennington were making Deal work hard but when Idris Ozturk doubled the lead with a well placed shot after good work from Tom Miles the tension was lifted and Deal began to play with more fluency.

Harry Virtue's hard work paid off as his interception found Jack Staples who crashed a right foot volley in to the roof of the net. James Van Der Dol added a header from another Jack Simpson-Barnes cross and completed his hat-trick with an exquisite lob to make the half time score 5-0 after more good work from Jack Staples.

Deal were in complete control after the break and added a sixth goal when Billy Simpson-Barnes set up Ellis Keohane to sidefoot home. Billy Simpson-Barnes notched the seventh with a neat finish after good work down the left wing.

Captain Ainsley Jones long range strike was too powerful for the Kennington keeper who made several superb saves. Fellow centre back Jon Stupples scored the ninth goal from close range and Luke Frost who had been denied a goal when his penalty struck the crossbar was finally rewarded for his perseverance when he completed the scoring with his first goal for the club.

Eoin Mcgrath kept another clean sheet  as Deal again defended well. James Cressey, Felix Percy, Luke Frost, Jon Stupples and Ainsley Jones' performances have all been crucial in helping Deal to such a brilliant defensive record.

Deal passed the ball well throughout with Tom Miles and Harry Virtue at the heart of most of Deals good work while both the Simpson-Barnes twins attacked down the flanks with great skill and pace.

On Sunday May 17th Deal take on Kennington Juniors Colts in the cup final at the Charles Sports Ground to try and complete a memorable double.

Sunday 26th April - Betteshanger 1 Deal Town Rangers 2

DEAL ONE AWAY WIN FROM TITLE AFTER HARD FOUGHT WIN

Rangers recorded a crucial 2-1 away win at local rivals Betteshanger to leave themselves needing a victory away to Kennington in their final match to win the league on goal difference.

Kicking down the slope in the first half Deal took the lead when James Van Der Dol latched on to a throughball and slotted the ball home confidently. Deal began to grow in confidence and when Jack Staples sent Billy Simpson-Barnes clear on the right only a superb save at full stretch by Matt Ellerby prevented Deal from doubling their lead.

However Betteshanger were soon back on level terms when the referee noticed a push by a Deal defender as a corner came over and awarded a penalty which was converted to make the half time score 1-1.

The goal gave the home side a lift and nearly took the lead when a long range free kick clipped the top of the crossbar with keeper Eoin Mcgrath who was largely untroubled in the Deal goal beaten.

Ainsley Jones, Jon Stupples, Felix Percy, Luke Frost and James Cressey all defended well in front of Eoin Mcgrath and Cressey impressed with his excellent use of the ball in the second half.

The crucial goal finally came when Elis Keohane drilled a low shot in to the far corner past Ellerby who made several more top class saves in the second half.

Idris Ozturk and the lively Jack Simpson-Barnes went close to extending the lead while the industrious Tom Miles and Harry Virtue won the battle in the middle of the park.

Both sets of players played with great comitment and can be proud of their performances.

Sunday 19th April - Deal Town Rangers 1 Whitstable Town Juniors 2

TITLE HOPES TAKE A BLOW

Rangers turned a disappointing performance at home to Whitstable losing 2-1. The result meaning that nothing less than two victories in their last two games will be good enough to snatch the title away from Red Arrow on goal difference.

Rangers never got going in the first half against their well organised and committed opponents and fell behind midway through the half  when a lapse in concentration allowed Whitstable to take the lead.

Early in the second half another defensive error led to a second Whitstable goal and left Deal with a mountain to climb. As the game wore on Deal gradually began to get on top but were restricted mainly to long range efforts as Whitstable defended doggedly.

Eventually pressure told and the arrears were reduced by an excellent header from Ainsley Jones. The nearest Deal came to equalising was with another Jones header but Whitstables defence held firm and they deservedly picked up the three points.

Tom Miles worked tirelessly in midfield while Jon Stupples and Luke Frost also turned in solid performances.

Sunday 5th April -Deal Town Rangers 6 Canterbury Eagles 0

SIX MORE GOALS,THREE MORE POINTS AND ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET.

Rangers picked up three more vital points with a comfortable 6-0 win over improving Canterbury Eagles.

After a fairly scrappy opening fifteen minutes Deal eventually took the lead when Ellis Keohane coolly converted a Jack Simpson-Barnes cross to put the home side ahead.

They quickly extended their lead when James Cressey hit a 25 yard drive in to the bottom corner of the net.  Harry Virtue went close when his shot unluckily struck the crossbar.

Deal were now passing the ball around excellently and added a third goal before half time when  Felix Percy found Jack Staples on the edge of the box and he turned smartly and chipped the keeper to make the score 3-0.

Tom Miles who was standing in for Eoin Mcgrath in goal was largely untroubled in the first half and was replaced by Felix Percy who made a smart save to ensure that Deal kept their 8th clean sheet in 13 league games. Ainsley Jones, Jon Stupples and Luke Frost all put in their usual solid performances at the back.

Deal found it hard to break down the Eagles defence in the second half but eventually added a fourth goal when Jack Simpson-Barnes floated a cross over the keepers head and into the far corner.

Billy Simpson-Barnes added a fifth goal when he cut in from the left wing and beat the keeper with a low drive. With time almost up Idris Ozturk fed Tom Miles who slotted the ball past the keeper to make the final score 6-0.

29th March 2009 - Deal Town Rangers 12 Kennington 0

RANGERS CLOSE GAP WITH STUNNING PERFORMANCE

Rangers recorded an impressive 12-0 home win against Kennington while leaders Canterbury Youth slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Red Arrow.

Kennington's defence held firm for the first fifteen minutes before a long range strike from Ellis Keohane put the home side ahead.  Once Deal were ahead they started to play with more confidence and created plenty of chances.  James Van Der Dol completed a first half hat-trick including one superbly set up by Jack Staples. Further long range strikes from James Cressey and Tom Miles who curled one into the top corner gave Deal a 6-0 half time lead.

In the second half Deal continued to dominate with Van Der Dol taking his tally to five.

Jack Simpson-Barnes, Billy Simpson Barnes, Idris Ozturk and a second Ellis Keohane goal made the final score 12-0.

Eoin Mcgrath made one excellent save when Kennington threatened. Ainsley Jones, Jon Stupples, Luke Frost, James Cressey and Felix Percy all played their part to ensure a seventh clean sheet in twelve league games.

Tom Miles, Harry Virtue and Jack Staples controlled the centre of the park throughout and the emphatic victory was totally deserved.

22nd March 2009 - Deal Town Rangers 1 Betteshanger 0

SOLITARY GOAL ENOUGH TO SEAL VITAL WIN

Rangers picked up three more vital points with a hard fought 1-0 victory against local rivals Betteshanger.

The first half was a keenly contested midfield battle with Tom Miles and Ben Chapman both impressing for their respective teams.  Deal found it hard to get on top with Thomas Williams defending well for the visitors. The best chance of the half fell to James Van Der Dol who shot straight at keeper Matt Ellerby. When Betteshanger got forward they found Ainsley Jones and Jon Stupples in good form and hard to get past.

In the second half Deal started to get on top and the breakthrough finally came when Jack Simpson-Barnes low shot was parried by Ellerby.  Billy Simpson-Barnes was first to react and tucked the ball home to open the scoring.

Deal had further chances to extend their lead with Ellis Keohane coming closest when his shot unluckily hit the post but the visitors defended stoutly and were still dangerous on the break.  Zak Smith broke free down the right side but his goalbound shot was superbly blocked by Ainsley Jones.

Deals defence held firm to record another clean sheet to ensure victory and to close the gap on league leaders Canterbury Youth.

15th March 2009- Deal Town Rangers 6 Hugin Vikings "A" 0

VIKINGS RAID REPELLED BY DEALS SHARP SHOOTERS.

Rangers returned to winning ways with an emphatic 6-0 home win against Hugin Vikings "A" to keep them in the division one title race and to make amends for last weeks draw against the same opponents.

In a scintillating first half performance Deal scored five times to effectively end the game as a contest.  Idris Ozturk opened the scoring with deft glancing header from Ainsley Jones free kick and he doubled the lead from close range when Hugin failed to clear a Billy Simpson-Barnes corner.  Tom Miles was first to react to a loose ball which he slotted home to put the home side three goals ahead.

Hugin had some chances to reduce the deficit.  Keeper Eoin Mcgrath came out bravely to thwart one attack and was ably supported by the back four of Ainsley Jones, Jon Stupples, Jack Staples and Luke Frost who not only defended well but used the ball intelligently allowing Deal to remain on top.

James Van Der Dol added a fourth goal from close range and then Jack Simpson-Barnes sprinted clear of the Hugin defence  to fire a shot in off the post to make the half time score 5-0.

To their credit Hugin dug in after the break and made things much harder for Deal but it was still the home side who dominated proceedings.  Ellis Keohane scored the only goal of the second half with a long range effort and nearly added a second when his shot struck the crossbar.

Harry Virtue turned in a solid performance in midfield while Felix Percy and James Cressey slotted in to the defence effortlessy to ensure Deal kept a clean sheet.

8th March 2009  - Hugin Vikings 3 Deal Town Rangers 3

VIKINGS DENIED VICTORY BY BATTLING RANGERS

Deal stretched their unbeaten run in the league to two years totalling nineteen matches but had to dig deep to come back from three goals down to do so in a classic game of two halves.

Hugin had a strong wind behind them in the first half and took the lead when a speculative effort sailed in to the roof of the net. They continued to dominate and doubled the lead when a defensive mix up led to an own goal.

After the break Deal started to get on top but Hugin broke away and were allowed to add a third goal which looked to have settled the game.  However to their credit Deal raised their game and Idris Ozturk burst through the defence to set up Tom Miles who finished well to give the away side a lifeline.

As the pressure mounted it was Hugin's turn to put through their own goal and Deal were soon back on level terms when Ainsley Jones rocketed a header in to the top corner after a pinpoint cross from Billy Simpson-Barnes.

It was one-way traffic now but a couple of superb saves by the Hugin keeper and great defending from their centre back kept Deal at bay to give them a deserved point.

1st March 2009 - Eythorne Rovers 0 Deal Town Rangers 1

EARLY GOAL IS A THORN IN ROVERS' SIDE

Deal clinched a place in the league cup final with a hard fought 1-0 win away to Eythorne Rovers.

Deal started brightly and scored the decisive goal when James Van Der Dol finished well after a great run down the right by Jack Simpson-Barnes. Even though they dominated Deal failed to add a second goal while on top and Eythorne began to grow in confidence but found centre backs Ainsley Jones and Jon Stupples hard to get past.

In the second half Eythorne continued to frustrate Deal by defending resolutely and matching their opponents all over the field but apart from one long range free kick which went narrowly wide with the keeper beaten they rarely looked like finding an equaliser.

Both sides showed great commitment throughout in a match played in a good spirit and while Deal can look forward to the cup final Eythorne can be proud of their great cup run  and be confident of having a successful season in Division one next year.

Deal's whole squad deserves praise for showing that they can grind out a result when denied the time and space to be at their fluent best.

February 22nd - Deal Town Rangers 6 Dover Rangers 0

DEAL TOO STRONG IN BATTLE OF THE RANGERS

Rangers U13s turned in an excellent team performance as they defeated Dover Rangers 6-0 improving on the 5-0 defeat they inflicted on them earlier in the season.

After a fairly even start Deal began to take control and took a deserved lead from an excellent finish from Billy Simpson-Barnes.  Deal quickly doubled their lead when James Van Der Dol fed Billy Simpson-Barnes down the left who crossed low in to the box where Idris Ozturk reacted quickest to prod the ball home.  A third goal soon followed as James Van Der Dol broke down the left and smashed the ball home with his left foot.

Dover had a decent opportunity to pul a goal back but keeper Eoin Mcgrath came out to block well and avert the danger.  Ainsley Jones and Jon Stupples played impeccably at the backand were ably supported by Luke Frost, Felix Percy and Jack Staples to ensure that Deal kept a clean sheet.

The second half was played almost entirely in the Dover half as Deal kept possession of the ball well with Tom Miles, Harry Virtue and Ellis Keohane controlling the midfield.

Further goals were inevitable and James Van Der Dol added his second with another good left foot strike.  Further goals came from Billy Simpson-Barnes with a second excellent lob and Jack Simpson-Barnes who slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper after some superb passing from Deal.

Dover competed well throughout and made Deal work hard for their goals but the margin of victory accurately reflected Deals dominance.

8th February 2009 - Deal Town Rangers 3 Canterbury Youth 3

YOUTH RALLY TO SNATCH A POINT

Rangers U13s were held to a 3-3 draw by Canterbury Youth in an entertaining top of the table clash at Marke Wood.

Canterbury started strongly and could have gone ahead in the first minute. They soon made amends by taking the lead as Deal were punished for failing to clear a corner.

For the rest of the half Deal dominated and eventually got back on level terms when Tom Miles shot was deflected by a defender past the hapless Canterbury keeper.

Deal continued to press forward after the break and went ahead when James Van Der Dol slotted the ball confidently past the keeper after an excellent throughball by Billy Simpson-Barnes.They doubled the lead when Ainsley Jones made another surging run and fed Ellis Keohane who finished well to make it 3-1.

Canterbury were always a threat going forward and pulled a goal back when a shot deflected off a defender past keper Eoin Mcgrath and in to the net.

Deal appeared to snuff out their next attack with a well timed slide tackle but the referee pointed to the spot and Canterbury converted the penalty to snatch a point.

18th January 2009 -Deal Town Rangers 12 Park Farm Rangers 0

FARM BEATEN BY A DOZEN OF THE BEST

Rangers u13s put last weeks disappointment behind them by progressing to the Semi-Finals of the league cup with an emphatic 12-0 win against Park Farm Rangers.

Deal started confidently racing into a 5 -0 lead in the opening twenty minutes. To their credit Park Farm dug in and with the help of the woodwork and some good saves by their keeper kept the scoreline to 5-0 at half time.

After the break Deal continued to dominate and added a further seven goals to their tally and rattled the woodwork three more times.

James Van Der Dol (3), Jack Simpson-Barnes (2), Billy Simpson-Barnes (2), Ellis Keohane (2), Idris Ozturk (2) and Tom Miles were all on target.

The whole squad  played their part in an excellent team display with Eoin Mcgrath making his return from injury in goal having very little to do.

11th January 2009 - Cray Wanderers 3 Deal Town Rangers 1

CUP RUN OVER

Rangers u13s finally bowed out of the Kent County Youth Cup at the Quarter Final stage with a 3-1 defeat away to Cray Wanderers.

Yet again Deal started slowly and this time paid the price for conceding two early goals from which they never looked likely to recover.

After the break Deal held Cray comfortably but where unable to break them down.

One promising Deal attack was thwarted by what seemed an obvious foul but the referee allowed play to continue and Cray broke to score their third goal and end the tie.

To their credit Deal didnt give up and were rewarded with a late consolation goal when Ainsley Jones' excellent pass was converted by Ellis Keohane.

14th December 2008 - Red Arrow 1 Deal Town Rangers 3

RED ARROWS SHOT DOWN

Rangers u13s continued their remarkable away form which has seen them remain unbeaten since March 2007 with a 3-1 away win at fellow title contenders Red Arrow Youth.

Having lost to Red Arrow in the opening game of the season Deal were aware how difficult this game would be and their task was made harder as they could only muster eleven fit players with several of them struggling with flu.

The first half was one of few chances with James Van Der Dol missing the clearest chance after Jack Staples pass sent him clear. The  defensive unit of Luke Frost, Ainsley Jones, Tom Miles and Felix Percy all defended superbly leaving James Cressey little to do in goal.  When called upon he handled and kicked the ball confidently.

As usual Deal turned in a strong second half performance with Harry Virtue's accurate passing and the skill and pace of Billy Simpson-Barnes and Idris Ozturk causing the home side plenty of problems it was no surprise when James Van Der Dol beat the offside trap to put Deal ahead.  Jack Simpson-Barnes doubled the lead with a superb finish after Staples sent him clear on the right.

Red Arrow put themselves back in the game with an excellent long range strike which gave Cressey no chance, but to their credit Deal were not content just to hang on and Van Der Dol put the game beyond doubt with his second of the game to make it 3-1.

7th December 2008 -  Deal Town Rangers 4 Ebbsfleet 3

RANGERS SINK THE FLEET

Rangers U13s moved in to the quarter finals of the Tesco Kent Youth cup after another stunning 2nd half fightback saw them dump Kent Youth League leaders Ebbsfleet out of the competition.

The first twenty minutes of the game was a midfield battle with neither side managing a shot of any note but indecision in Deals defence led to two Ebbsfleet goals in as many minutes. Both times the ball being hit in to an empty net. Deal's first chance came just before half time when Ainsley Jones headed narrowly over from close range.

Right from the whistle at the start of the second half it was a much different story as within a minute Deal were back in the game with a Billy Simpson-Barnes goal. Deals confidence was up now and were now slicing open Ebbsfleet almost at will. With Tom Miles and Harry Virtue now dominating the centre of the park it was no surprise when Jack Simpson-Barnes put Deal level. Rangers were now passing the ball superbly and added two more goals through Ellis Keohane and a second for Jack Simpson-Barnes.

To their credit Ebbsfleet dug in and started to push Deal back but found captain Ainsley Jones in imperious form and fellow centre back Jon Stupples, Luke Frost, Idris Ozturk and Felix Percy a diificult defence to get past. When they did James Cressey made an excellent save at full stretch to keep Ebbsfleet out. They did reduce the deficit to one goal but the defence held firm leaving Deal victors by 4-3 in a game which both teams played their part in entertaining the excellent support shown by both sets of parents.

Deal can now look forward to an away quarter final tie at Cray Wanderers.

16th November 2008 - Deal Town Rangers 3 Canterbury Youth 0

Rangers U13s progressed to the last eight of the league cup with a hard fought and well deserved 3-0 win against Canterbury Youth at the Charles Sports Ground.  After a fairly even start it was the visitors who came closest to taking the lead with a well struck free-kick which hit the crossbar with stand-in keeper James Cressey well beaten.  Billy  Simpson-Barnes went close to putting Deal ahead when he latched on to a Jack Staples throughball but his shot went narrowly wide.  Deal's back four of Luke Frost, Jon Stupples, Ainsley Jones and Felix Percy were now coping comfortably with Canterbury's strikers and with Harry Virtue and Jack Simpson-Barnes gaining control in the centre of the pitch a Deal goal was becoming inevitable.

It eventually came after a neat piece of interplay between Idris Ozturk and Ellis Keohane down the right wing allowed Ozturk to finish confidently to give Deal the lead.  They were able to double the lead before half-time when James Van Der Dol robbed a defender and set up Ellis Keohane who slotted home coolly with his left foot.  Deal had the better of the second half but couldnt kill the game off as Canterbury battled to stay in the game. Tom Miles replaced the injured Jon Stupples and despite not being 100% himself he put in a faultless display at centre back. James Cressey making just his 2nd appearance in goal kicked confidently throughout. With time running out  Canterbury missed the best chance of the match when their striker sliced his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.  With their last attack of the match Deal finally added a third goal when Billy Simpson-Barnes broke clear and beat the keeper with ease to seal the victory.  Both sides showed great commitment and skill in difficult conditions and were a credit to their respective clubs.  The match was well refereed by Jake Marsh.
